Combat acne with all-natural products? It’s possible!

Combat acne

That bothersome acne!

It is probably the most widely known and most common skin condition: acne. Many adolescents desperately search for a solution, but adults can also be prone to this aggravating issue. In fact, most of us will deal with acne to a greater or lesser extent during puberty. Unpleasant as it may be, there are effective solutions. For some it might be limited to a single pimple, for others it might extend to a more serious skin condition, which may also have a significant psychological effect.

What is acne?

Your skin contains glands that produce sebum (a greasy protective substance). With acne, these sebaceous glands become clogged. Blackheads and pimples appear mainly in spots with a high concentration of sebaceous glands, such as the back and face, especially on the forehead and chin.

What is the cause of acne?

Nearly everyone develops pimples during puberty as the number of bacteria on the skin increases. This varies from person to person. Hormonal changes are responsible for these pimples. The skin’s sebaceous glands start to produce more sebum and the outer layer of the skin starts to thicken. The combination of excessive sebum production and accumulation of dead skin cells can cause clogged pores: a blackhead. A pimple is an inflamed blackhead.

A number of other factors can cause pimples, for example:

  • Use of certain medication
  • Hereditary factors
  • Use of certain substances that clog the sebaceous glands, such as heavy makeup

What can you do about acne?

Although it is probably very tempting, it’s best not to pop a pimple!! Leave your skin alone as much as possible. Wash your skin with a mild cleanser and lukewarm water, then pat it dry. Preferably use no or minimal makeup. Cosmetics may contain substances that stimulate the development of acne. Make use of natural remedies. Good examples of all-natural products are ethereal tea tree oil, lavender oil and geranium oil. These essential oils are anti-bacterial, and help to calm and soothe an inflamed skin.

The recipe below describes how to make your own essential oil mix to combat acne.

# 20 ml of jojoba oil: Jojoba oil is well known for its ability to be quickly absorbed by the skin and its soothing effect. The texture of jojoba oil is very similar to that of sebum, the natural lubricant which keeps your skin hydrated. It is a soothing oil that is suitable for all skin types.

# 3 drops of lavender oil: Has a calming and soothing effect.

# 4 drops of tea tree oil: Has a strong anti-bacterial effect.

# 3 drops of geranium oil: Regulates sebum production.

Preparation of your own essential oil mix:

1. Pour the base oil into a clean bowl or dish. Make sure it is clean to ensure good hygiene. Use a ceramic or glass dish, not a plastic one since essential oils can affect plastic. An even better choice is to purchase and use a dark glass bottle with a dropper or a pipette, for more accurate dosage.

2. Mix the essential oils together with the base oil using a clean spoon.

After gently cleansing your face each morning and evening, gently apply a few drops of the oil mixture to the affected skin using a cotton bud. If necessary, add a few extra drops according to your skin’s needs. Be mindful – the less the oil comes into contact with your hands, or is exposed to the air, the better. This will benefit the quality of the oil and is much more hygienic.
