What to do with dry or cracked skin

What is dry skin?

Do you know that feeling? Your skin feels dry, tight and/or shows flaking. Chances are that you have dry skin. But what is dry skin exactly? To understand, it’s good to stop and think about the way our skin works. The skin is the barrier between our body, which on average consists of 60% water, and our environment. The skin ensures that we can both absorb as well as secrete substances. Therefore, the skin does not form a hermetically sealed whole. As a result, our water reserves evaporate partially through the skin on a daily basis.

An important function of the skin is to limit the natural loss of moisture . The epidermis, the outer layer of the skin which is made up of horny cells, is tasked with this important job. The horny layer is rich in proteins, which ensure the moisture is retained as well as possible. The cells are held together by fatty substances that allow a small amount of moisture to pass through. This creates a tight structure that ensures good moisture reserves in the skin. With dry skin, the epidermis contains an insufficient fat and / or protein content. As a result, the skin retains too little moisture and will dry out and flake. The production of sebum, an oily substance which acts as a skin lubricant, also plays a major role in dry skin.

What causes dry skin?

  • Certain shower or bathing habits. For example, the soap or shower foam that you use. Taking very hot showers.
  • The use of certain cosmetic products. Many cosmetic products can affect the acidity of your skin.
  • An unhealthy lifestyle and diet. For example, smoking and excessive use of alcohol play a major role here.
  • Your age. As you get older, the hormonal balance in your body also changes.
  • Harsh weather conditions. Cold temperatures, wind and dry air will dry out the skin from the outside. During the winter months your skin can feel even drier.

To nourish and soothe dry skin I have put together a short, simple but very effective recipe, based on a carrier oil and essential oils.

Ingredients:

# 20 ml of macadamia oil. Macadamia oil is ideal for dry skin. It penetrates the skin deeply and is highly moisturizing. Macadamia oil is known for its ability to allow the skin to quickly absorb the essential oils. The perfect base oil.

# 3 drops of geranium oil: cleansing, refreshing and tightening.

# 4 drops of patchouli oil: helps to restore your skin.

Preparation of your own essential oil mix

1 – Pour the base oil into a clean bowl or dish. Make sure it is clean to ensure good hygiene. Use a ceramic or glass dish, not a plastic one since essential oils can affect plastic. An even better choice is to purchase and use a dark glass bottle with a dropper or a pipette.

2 – Mix the essential oils together with the base oil, 20 ml equals about four teaspoons. Use a clean spoon for this.

Use

After cleansing the face, gently massage into the skin each morning and evening. Apply extra if necessary, especially in cold weather. Use a cotton ball for application. Apply a few drops of oil to the cotton ball. Be mindful – the less the oil comes into contact with your hands, or is exposed to the air, the better. This will benefit the quality of the oil and is much more hygienic.

What is cracked skin?

Cracked skin usually develops when the skin becomes too dry. When the skin dries out, it loses its elasticity and the stress of everyday use will cause the skin to tear and crack. These cracks can be very painful and pose a risk of infection. Damaged, sensitive and irritated cracked skin often has problems retaining moisture. This results in chapped skin with abrasions, irritation, redness and itching. It is important to treat cracked skin before more serious health problems arise. Cracked skin needs extra attention and a substantial hydration boost.

The recipe below describes how you can treat cracked skin. Hydrating and nourishing.

Ingredients:

# 20 ml of almond oil: almond oil is a soothing oil which is suitable for all skin types, but especially for dry and cracked skin. The essential fatty acids contained in almond oil support the natural hydration of the skin.

# 2 drops of frankincense oil: the oil helps combat infection and supports the production of new skin cells.

# 2 drops of mandarin oil: acts as a strong emollient and moisturizer.
